Pet Play

How to name your Pet Play space

Not to brag, but it only took me about four years(?) to finally choose a name for my pet play space… I’m just really decisive like that.

Finally settling on a name was a surprisingly important moment for me, and it has helped me feel closer to my kitten space.

So naturally, any time I do something that improves my pet play, I want to write about it!

In this post we will look at:

  • The benefits of naming your pet play space
  • 3 websites to find name ideas
  • 3 ways to choose a name for your pet space

The benefits of naming your pet play space

Using a special name(s) can add depth to your roleplay scene. It helps to create more “space” between you the reader, the human, all different roles you take on, and you the pup, the kitten, the pet.

This space can allow for so much more expression and personality in your pet side. Watching pets grow into their names is honestly one of my favourite things!

Naming your pet play space can act as an excellent ‘on/off’ switch for pet play scenes.

For example when a friend of mine is referred to as “Wuffie” they know that now is an acceptable time to go into a pet space – if they want to.

And at the end of the scene when they are referred to as their ‘regular’ name again. It lets them know that their Top would like them to come out of their headspace.

A special name can give you more room for personalisation of your pet play scenes. Adding named tags to your pet play collars, colour schemes, designs, images that suit your pet’s name and personality can really bring your roleplay to life – and is honestly so much fun to build up over time!

It makes negotiating really fun when you can say things like “I’d really like to meet Wuffie sometime”,  “I’m thinking of taking Wuffie out to play fetch soon” or “Do you want to play with Wuffie while I play videogames?”

Or in my case

“You know mochi is such a cute kitten – she should definitely be getting all the pats and snuggles tonight” – insert puppy dog eyes here –

If you have multiple pet spaces you like to play with, naming them can help prevent confusion! This is especially true if you tend to go non-verbal or minimally verbal during pet play scenes.

3 websites to find pet name ideas

I would recommend that before you start looking at names, try to narrow down what you want your name to be like.

For example you can choose to name your pet play space after:

A theme – a friend of mine names all her pets after Disney characters.

Maybe a characteristic of your pet could inspire their name – are they cuddly, cheeky, food motivated?

Or even pick what you want the name to start or end with – all my pets’ names start with M and I wanted to continue that for my own pet space.

This will help to save you time and energy when you are looking for names – there’s a lot out there!

1

This fantasy name generator is so cool, it will generate tons of different names according to whichever category you pick from, and is a super fun way to look for a unique name! They have over 150 different categories including pet names!

2

As you look through names keep a list of the names you like for future reference

3 ways to pick your pet name

This is objectively the hardest part with all the name options out there so here are 3 methods to choose a name for your pet play space:

1 – Have your Top/D-type pick

Having your D-type, whatever they may be to you, choosing your name can add to the power exchange and the role of being a pet, their pet.

This can be really special for a lot of people in long term dynamics/relationships,

and I for one think it is really really cute.

I would recommend that if you do choose to go this route,

work together to make a list of names you both like.

This will take some of the pressure off the D-type when they can pick from a list of names that they know you will like,

and it will prevent any blunders like giving your petside the same name as your grandma or something equally awkward.

2 – Let fate decide

Take your list of names and put all the names into a hat/jar/container,

Or

An online random generator like this one!

Then the universe can decide your pet name! Or you can just keep redrawing until you get your name!

3 – Trial possible names during a pet scene

This one can be really fun!

Organise to have a Pet play scene with someone you trust; your top, playpartner, friend whatever works.

Once everyone is settled into the pet play scene, alternate between trying different names and seeing how the pet reacts to each – indifferent, growling, perking up etc.,

and you’re more familiar with pet play scene activities (pats, playing with toys, wrestling etc).

Alternating between these will help maintain the pet’s headspace, and help prevent them over thinking their responses.

I would recommend trying each name out a few times during the scene.

After your scene the pet and ‘human’ can have a review and talk about what happened in response to each name, how they felt, and what they think works best. You can then choose a name from there.

Bonus Pet play date idea

Go out and get a pet tag engraved with your pets name,

maybe browse the pet sections at near by stores and have a coffee.

(This was one of my favorite self dates last year)
